Friends in Fellowship – PtP Prayer letter – July 2022

Dear Friends,

One of my favourite verses on counselling is Proverbs 20:5: “The purposes of a man’s heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out.”

One way to understand is that a Counsellor is expected to be a man of understanding who can draw these purposes out and place it before the counselee for better understanding. Quite often intelligent and gifted people seem to be lost and unawares of their purpose in life. I remember a young man I had met at a youth conference come to me to share that he was planning to get into ‘full-time’ ministry but I sensed that there was neither joy nor passion in his decision. I found out that he was a brilliant engineer seeking to become an ethical hacker (train himself in internet security). I asked him how he had come to change his plans abruptly? He said that he was at a meeting where he felt what he was wanting to do was not ‘ministry’ and therefore not doing ‘God’s will’. I offered him a new perspective. Just as a policeman is there to prevent and detect crime in the neighbourhood, he could be the best ‘cop’ on the net and even work for the police department. Working in the police department as God’s agent is a ‘full-time’ ministry (Romans 13). He could be a great kingdom worker. A few days later he called and informed that he would continue with his training in becoming an ethical hacker for God.

Recently, I came across another verse: “A fool has no delight in understanding, but in expressing his own heart (Proverbs 18: 2).” As counsellors, we must seek to understand the purposes of God for our counselees and then speak. It would be foolish on our part to express our own heart even if it is well-meant. We tend to express our own heart, perhaps due to our own unique experiences or that of others that we observe. But God may have a different plan for our counselees. Like in the case above, going to a Bible college and becoming a Christian worker and being a godly ethical hacker are equally important in God’s sight. But for the young man God revealed to him that he could be an ethical hacker, a servant of God. Perhaps that’s why He gave him special abilities in software skills.

Let us seek wisdom of God to understand His purposes for each one as everyone is unique.

Yours in Christ,

Dr. Samson Gandhi
