Dear Friends,
The crisis of Christian faith is not due to the absence of the word. In churches and on social media, the word is being proclaimed. There is enough print and digital gospel content at the touch of a screen. Some people are convicted when they hear the word about Christ!
Other people cannot believe except when they ‘see’ Jesus. Many of Jesus’ disciples could not believe when they were told that Jesus had risen. They ran to the tomb to find everything as the women had reported to them, but “Him they did not see.” The disciples had the luxury of expecting to see Jesus in person, and He also appeared to them. When He appeared to a very determined Thomas, Jesus declared, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Today, we cannot demand as Thomas did. (Although Jesus is sovereign, He can choose to appear to anyone, whether they demand to see Him or not.) However, the gospel proclaimed is not enough to convict people of their need for salvation. They need to see Jesus demonstrated. Like the early disciples, people want to see Jesus in His disciples. They want to see Christlikeness. Is it any wonder then that Jesus said, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Let us love one another – as brothers and sisters in Christ – and let people ‘see’ that we are His disciples demonstrating His love. God will do the rest in bringing them into the kingdom of God.
